Find Your Community For Your Mental Health

This year, Mental Health Awareness Week takes place from 12 to 18 May and the theme is ‘community’. This blog will share ideas about how to find your community and how it impacts your mental health.

Why are communities are important?

Being part of a safe, positive community is vital for our mental health and wellbeing. Communities give us a sense of belonging, safety, purpose and support during hard times. They can look different to different people; it can be a local community or a digital community. Whatever community means to you, it’s important to celebrate the communities that protect and support us.

Here are only some ways being part of a community improves mental health and wellbeing:

  • Combat loneliness and build connections: Spending time with other people can make you feel more connected and less isolated. Communities are often formed of people with similar interests or passions, so you’ll find people who understand and this can be a big comfort.
  • Socialising and shared experiences: Community events – in person or online – are a great way to spend time doing something you love. Sharing these experiences can do wonders for your mood, general wellbeing, and sense of connection.
  • Purpose and contribution: Contributing to your community can give you a sense of purpose and make you feel good about yourself, especially when your efforts help others.
  • Support and resilience: Communities can be a safety net of emotional and practical support during hard times. Being supported by others reminds you that you don’t have to do it all on your own. Sharing experiences and supporting each other helps everyone build resilience.
  • Resources and belonging: Some communities offer resources like support groups designed to enhance wellbeing. Feeling like you belong in a community can make you feel more secure and less anxious.

How to find your community

Finding your people can take time, but there’s a community out there for everyone, here are some tips to help you find yours.

Start by looking for people who share your interests; join clubs, groups, or online forums related to your hobbies. Local events, workshops, and volunteer opportunities can also be great places to meet like-minded people, so keep an eye on what’s happening in your area. Don’t forget about the power of the internet – online communities and social media groups can help you connect with others who share your passions. And if you’re not sure where to start, ask your friends, they might know of some great groups or events you’d enjoy.

If you want to talk about this or anything else with someone who will listen, offer information, advice and advocacy, then contact the Meic helpline any day, between 8am and midnight. Confidential and free.
